IFAM – The International Football (Soccer) Arbitration Moot

Thauli Sports Law is honoured and proud to partner with the IFAM for its second annual football (soccer) competition. Given the growing demand for sports law professionals, the IFAM’s founders and head organisers, Alessandro Carlini and Botond Pintér, developed this football moot to give law students and junior lawyers who have little or no experience in sports law an affordable opportunity to use their legal skills to argue a football dispute.

The moot will replicate a real-life football arbitration in its entirety, including drafting written submissions and presenting arguments at in-person hearings before Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) arbitrators and world-leading sports lawyers. The moot starts from the point where the FIFA Football Tribunal has rendered a decision on the dispute and that decision is now being appealed to CAS. Competitors will work on both sides of the case in written and oral rounds. Harveen Thauli is one of the arbitrators who will be critiquing and providing feedback to competitors on their submissions.

The IFAM offers two packages – a Full Mooting Package and a Distance Mooting Package. The IFAM’s “Register” page explains the difference between the two packages. In summary, the Full Mooting Package includes the in-person hearings, which will take place between April 25 and 27, 2024 in the scenic coastal town of Platja D’Aro, a one hour drive north of Barcelona, Spain. An exceptional presenter has an opportunity to win an internship with a leading sports law firm. For those who cannot travel to Platja D’Aro, the Distant Mooting Package offers competitors an opportunity to participate in written submissions only and a chance to win awards for outstanding submissions. Each Package offers a football moot crash course. Overall, the IFAM’s central goal is to provide a forum for those passionate about football and sports law to practice preparing and arguing submissions at a competitive level.
